Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
