The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
